When you first bring up the diplomacy screen notice that the colored oval "i" button in the upper left is selected. This means that you are looking at the information panel of the diplomacy screen.
In the middle of the upper part of the screen you see four small vertical icons which allow you to see four different types of information while you are on this panel. As you click on these icons the map changes to display the type of information represented by each small icon.
By clicking on any country on the map you see the information about that particular country.
